Wide Open Pro Rodeo: Florida's Premier Rodeo Experience Returns to Ft. Pierce

When the dust settles and the sun sets over the Adams Equestrian Arena in Ft. Pierce, Florida, history will have been made once again at the 2025 Wide Open Pro Rodeo. Mark your calendars for February 28-March 1, 2025, as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association brings one of the Southeast's most anticipated rodeo events back to St. Lucie County.

A Tradition of Excellence

The Wide Open Pro Rodeo has established itself as a cornerstone event in Florida's rich rodeo heritage. While many northern states are still battling winter weather, Florida's rodeo season heats up, drawing top competitors from across the nation eager to earn early-season points and prize money.

What makes the Wide Open Pro Rodeo special isn't just the $20,000+ in prize money or the PRCA sanctioning—it's the unique blend of professional competition and hometown hospitality that can only be found in Ft. Pierce. The event coincides with the St. Lucie County Fair, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrates both agricultural traditions and world-class rodeo action.

"There's something magical about Florida rodeos," says one regular competitor. "The fans understand and appreciate what they're watching, and the energy at the Adams Equestrian Arena is electric. You can feel the history in this place."

Seven Events, Countless Thrills

The Wide Open Pro Rodeo features all seven traditional PRCA events, each showcasing different skills rooted in the working traditions of the American West:

Bareback Riding

Last year's champion Bucky McAlpine scored an impressive 76 points on Silver Spurs Club's "Itchy," setting the bar high for 2025 competitors. This event requires riders to stay aboard a bucking horse with only a rigging to hold onto—no saddle, no reins. Judges score both the rider's technique and the horse's performance.

Steer Wrestling

When Mose Fleming clocked a 6.6-second run to win last year's steer wrestling competition, the crowd erupted. Also known as "bulldogging," this event requires cowboys to leap from horseback onto a running steer, using strength and technique to bring the animal to the ground—a true test of timing, coordination, and power.

Team Roping

The only true team event in rodeo, team roping showcases partnership between two riders—the header and the heeler. The Culpepper duo dominated last year with a lightning-fast 6.3-second run. Spectators can expect more breathtaking displays of precision as teams compete for championship honors.

Saddle Bronc Riding

Often called rodeo's classic event, saddle bronc riding evolved directly from ranch work. Cameron Lang's 77-point ride on "Only Hope" claimed the title in 2024. Riders must maintain perfect form while aboard a powerful bucking horse for eight seconds, creating one of rodeo's most visually impressive displays.

Tie-Down Roping

Requiring both speed and finesse, tie-down roping tests a cowboy's ability to catch and secure a calf in the shortest time possible. Last year saw a three-way tie for first place, with Randall Carlisle, Cross Fulford, and Cheyenne Harper all clocking impressive 9.2-second runs.

Barrel Racing

The premier women's event in professional rodeo, barrel racing combines horsemanship, speed, and strategy as competitors navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. The lightning-fast turns and thundering straightaways make this a fan favorite every year.

Bull Riding

The event that brings crowds to their feet, bull riding features the ultimate showdown between cowboy and beast. Ernie Courson Jr. conquered his bull with an 80-point ride last year, but with each rider needing just eight seconds to qualify for a score, anything can happen when the chute gate swings open.

The Competitors: Champions Return to Ft. Pierce

The Wide Open Pro Rodeo consistently attracts top talent from across the country. Defending champions will return to protect their titles, while hungry newcomers look to make their mark on the 2025 season.

Local Florida competitors always bring extra energy to the arena, with hometown crowds cheering on familiar faces. The all-around cowboy title—awarded to the competitor who earns the most money in multiple events—will once again be hotly contested.

"Florida has produced some incredible rodeo talent over the years," notes one rodeo historian. "The Wide Open Pro Rodeo gives these athletes a chance to compete on home soil against the best in the business."

More Than Just Competition

While the rodeo action forms the heart of the event, the Wide Open Pro Rodeo offers entertainment for the entire family. World-class specialty acts will perform throughout each performance, with professional rodeo clowns providing both comedy and crucial protection for fallen riders.

The rodeo will feature professional announcers who educate newcomers while entertaining seasoned fans, explaining the nuances of each event and sharing stories of the competitors and animal athletes.

Before and after performances, attendees can enjoy the festive atmosphere of the St. Lucie County Fair, with food vendors offering everything from traditional fair favorites to local Florida specialties. Various exhibits and activities ensure entertainment for all ages.

Securing Your Spot at the Action

Tickets for the 2025 Wide Open Pro Rodeo will go on sale in late December 2024, and based on previous years' attendance, early purchase is recommended. The Adams Equestrian Arena offers excellent sightlines throughout the venue, but premium seating options typically sell out quickly.

Tickets will be available for purchase directly through this website when sales begin. Various seating options will accommodate different preferences and group sizes, with special considerations for families.

"We've seen attendance grow year after year," says an event organizer. "There's something special about watching rodeo in Florida, and word has spread. We encourage fans to secure their tickets early to guarantee the best possible experience."

Community Impact and Heritage

The Wide Open Pro Rodeo represents more than just a sporting event—it's a celebration of agricultural heritage and western traditions that have deep roots in Florida culture. Many are surprised to learn that Florida has a rich ranching history dating back to the 16th century, making it one of America's oldest cattle regions.

The economic impact of the rodeo extends throughout St. Lucie County, with visitors filling local hotels, restaurants, and shops. Additionally, the event creates opportunities for local businesses to connect with the community through sponsorships and vendor booths.

The rodeo also serves as a platform for charitable initiatives, with portions of proceeds often supporting youth western sports programs, agricultural education, and community development projects.

Preparing for Your Rodeo Experience

For first-time attendees, the Wide Open Pro Rodeo offers an authentic introduction to western sports. Here are some tips to enhance your experience:

What to Wear: Florida weather in late February can be unpredictable. Layered clothing is recommended, and while western attire is popular, it's certainly not required. Comfortable footwear is essential for navigating the grounds.

What to Bring: Consider bringing cushions for the bleacher seating, though many premium seats include backs. Binoculars can enhance viewing of the action, and don't forget sun protection for daytime performances.

Rodeo Etiquette: Arrive early to enjoy pre-show activities and find your seats. Standing during the national anthem and grand entry is customary. Feel free to cheer loudly for impressive performances—audience energy is part of what makes rodeo special!

Animal Welfare: A Top Priority

The Wide Open Pro Rodeo adheres to strict animal welfare guidelines established by the PRCA. Veterinarians are on-site throughout the event, and the health and safety of all animal athletes remain paramount.

The stock contractor, Silver Spurs Club, is known for providing some of the best bucking stock in the business. These animals are valuable athletes that receive excellent care throughout their careers.

A Florida Tradition Continues

As February approaches, anticipation will build for what promises to be another spectacular edition of the Wide Open Pro Rodeo. Whether you're a lifelong fan or curious first-timer, the event offers an unforgettable glimpse into the skill, courage, and tradition that define the sport of rodeo.

When the gates swing open at the Adams Equestrian Arena, you'll be witnessing more than just a competition—you'll be part of a living tradition that connects Florida's past to its present. Don't miss your chance to experience the excitement, skill, and western heritage that make the Wide Open Pro Rodeo a must-see event.

Remember to check back for ticket availability in late December 2024, and prepare yourself for two unforgettable days of world-class rodeo action in the heart of Florida's cowboy country.
